FABRICA

Build your own distortion, one stage at a time.

FABRICA is a workbench for saturation. Pick stages from the palette, wire them on the canvas in any order, and hear the circuit you just drew. Split the signal, run stages side by side, or give the lows and highs their own chain. FABRICA lines the paths back up in time for you.

  • Real tubes, in real units.

Triode and pentode models take a supply voltage, a plate load and a cathode resistor, the same numbers you'd find on a schematic. A diode clipper sits beside them.

  • Fast shapers too.

Nine classic curves, from hard clip and tanh to a wavefolder and a bitcrusher, for when physics would be overkill. All of them are anti-aliased.

  • See what you're adding.

A built-in analyser shows the spectrum, the waveform, and the first ten harmonics with THD. A test tone lets you probe the circuit without playing a note.

What it's modelled on.

Vacuum tubes and diodes, worked out from the published equations for each device. Change the plate voltage, the load or the bias and the sound changes the way it would on the bench. Each stage can run at 2×, 4× or 8× oversampling.

In your DAW it's listed under its full name, Fabrica de Distorsion.

With ENTROPY. Link it and FABRICA's real parts age with the room: the resistors and capacitors around each tube, the tone stack, and the diodes, whose forward voltage shifts as the room warms.
