OXIDE

Four playback heads on a loop of tape. Grab them and move them.

OXIDE is a tape echo with four playback heads on a moving loop. Where a head sits on the tape sets when its repeat arrives, so the display isn't a picture of the delay, it is the delay. Drag a head along the tape to change its timing, and up or down to change its level.

  • Two ways to change time.

MOTOR changes the tape speed, so repeats bend in pitch while the motor catches up. HEADS slides the heads instead and keeps the pitch steady.

  • Two tracks on one tape.

SPREAD lets the left and right tracks wobble and drop out on their own. Pan each head, and cross the repeats over for ping-pong.

  • Stop the tape.

HOLD it, FREEZE it, or STOP it and hear the motor wind down. REVERSE plays every repeat backwards.

What it's modelled on.

Speed, distance and a motor with weight. A repeat arrives when the tape has carried the sound from the record head to a playback head, at 3¾, 7½, 15 or 30 inches per second. The motor takes time to change speed, the tape wows and flutters, and every trip around the loop loses a little top and bottom.

With ENTROPY. Link it and OXIDE's motor speed, and each track's record level and tone filters, age along with the rest of the session.
